Downloads

The downloads can be found on the right side. It is recommended to read the following to ensure proper installation.

License

Version 2 is a paid update. That means that people who have bought an 1.x license have to buy an upgrade to be able to switch. After installing version 2.x you first have to enter the license key before you open the project file that you used in 1.5.

System requirements

There are some requirements to be able to run this program. You will need at least a computer with a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system like Windows, Mac OS X, Linux or other Unix variants. On this machine you need to have installed a Java Runtime environment (JRE) version 1.5 or higher. If possible it is recommend to use version 1.6 or 1.7 for a more smooth experience.

The minimum amount of required memory is 256 Mb of RAM, but 512 Mb or more is recommended. The minimal screen resolution to run iTrain properly is 1024 x 768. Depending on the size of the layout a higher resolution is recommended.

Serial port and USB

Some digital systems (Märklin or Intellibox) are connected to the computer by means of a serial port. In this case you need to have a free serial port on your computer. Many new PC's and notebooks and all Apple computers don't have a serial port available. You can use a USB serial adapter to create a serial port. We recommend the Keyspan USA 19HS or an adapter based on the FTDI chipset, for example at Conrad.

Newer digital systems may already have a USB interface. In most cases this USB interface emulates a serial port in software so that for iTrain it acts like a serial port. This serial port emulation or Virtual Com Port (VCP) requires drivers to be installed on your computer. Normally Windows drivers are already supplied on a CD-rom, but in many cases drivers for Mac OS X and Linux are also downloadable from the internet from the chipset supplier.

Depending on your digital system two drivers are very popular and available for multiple platforms:

Installation

The installation procedure differs per operating system:

Mac OS X

Download the iTrain disk image and copy the application to your 'Application' folder (and you can drag it to the 'Dock' to start it from there as well).

Mountain Lion (10.8) might complain that the disk image has been damaged, but that is not the case. Gatekeeper in Mountain Lion uses very strict security settings by default and only allows signed application. iTrain is not signed and you and you have to change the 'Security and Privacy' preferences. Select 'Allow application downloaded from Anywhere' at the bottom of the first tab 'General'.

On Lion (10.7) and Mountain Lion (10.8) Java has to be installed first, but when it is not installed and you launch iTrain it asks you to install it automatically via a popup. Please choose 'Install' and follow the process. Java has already been installed by Apple on Tiger (10.4), Leopard (10.5) and Snow Leopard (10.6) if all the software updates have been applied.

The minimum requirement is Tiger (10.4), because of Java 1.5, but the program will run smoother with Java 1.6 that is only available on Snow Leopard and higher.

Windows

Download the installer and run it.

Linux

On Linux it is recommend to use Java 1.6 or higher and the Oracle JDK is preferred over the OpenJDK (for speed reasons). To check if Java 1.6 or higher has already been installed on your computer go to a terminal and type the following and press the ENTER key:

java -version

If there is no Java 1.6 or higher available or the version is too low then install a new version. To download a Java Runtime environment (JRE) you can go to the Official Java Standard Edition (SE) download site or go to the package manager of your Linux distribution to install Java.

Download the installer and when asked to Open or Save in the browser choose Save. The downloaded file is a Java archive that needs to be started with java. This can be done in most case by right clicking on the file and run it with Oracle Java (Ubuntu). If this is not working or not an option you can start it from the command line with:

java -jar iTrain_installer.jar
